Easy Walks (For When You Are Not Ready For Steep Hikes)

Easy Walks (For When You Are Not Ready For Steep Hikes)

Not everyday is a day for the mountains. If you are looking for a more relaxing time, need to rest your legs or if the weather is too rough for a long hike here are some more mellow options to enjoy some fresh air and beautiful scenery around Sørvågen, without the expedition!

Sørvågenvatnet – Sørvågen Lake Walk

Type: Loop

Total distance: 2.4 km

Climb: 40 m

Why we love it: Just a tiny detour to take in the gorgeous waterfall, or visit the shop!

This walk follows the path along the shores of Sørvågenvatnet and is a very popular for both visitors and locals.

Glåpen Fyr – Glåpen Lighthouse

Type: Loop

Total distance: 2.8 km

Climb: 40 m

Why we love it: Peer into rock pools and maybe see whales on a calm day

From the main road in Sørvågen, take the side road by the Tide hotel (opposite the cafe). Follow this road for 350 m until you come to a 3-way junction.

Two of these roads are part of the loop and the third is a small private road to access 2 houses. You can walk this trail clockwise or anticlockwise, both options are lovely. If you go left at this junction (clockwise) you will end up going down the steep metal steps below the radio tower. If you go right you will climb them. We will describe going left (or clockwise) to avoid the steep climb.

Follow the road left at the junction and you will walk along the residential road with the harbour down to your left. The road turns to the right and ends at a small clearing by a rocky inlet. From here you turn right through a gap in the wall, leaving the road and starting on the trail. The trail begins along the rocks and goes right beside the small cabins you can see from the road. Don’t worry this is actually a trail! Once you slip past the cabins, follow the trail up towards the light house. There are a few options here so don’t worry about following the exact trail – they all go more or less the same way along the coast.

Take a break by the lighthouse or the radio tower to look out over the sea. If you like, you can scrabble down to the water’s edge to enjoy looking in some of the rock pools. Be careful of slippery rocks and seaweed.

On a clear day you will see the mountains all along Lofoten and the mainland. From the radio tower, take the metal steps back down to the road and turn left to make your way back to the junction.

Seljevika

Type: Out and back

Total distance: 2.4 km

Climb: 70 m

Why we love it:

Believe it or not until the tunnel was built in 2000, this path was the main (or even only) road to Sørvågen. Now it is a lovely spot to walk or cycle along the sea away from the noise of passing traffic. To reach this walk, drive or cycle along the E10 through Moskenes and just beyond. After the graveyard on the left you will see a small area to park on the right. If this is full, there is another parking option at the far end of the tunnel. This is a straightforward but popular walk along the sea. Keep an eye out for passing boats!

Viewpoint at Å

Type: Out and back

Total distance: 700 m

Climb: 20 m

Why we love it:

The village of Å marks the end of the road in Lofoten. If you are at the little village, whether to visit the fishing museum, stock fish museum or to taste one of the famous cinnamon rolls from the bakery, we recommend stretching your legs a little more and walking out to the viewpoint.

This point is just a little further than the large car park outside the village. When approaching Å, the historic village centre is to the left but by going through the last tunnel of the E10, you reach a large carpark. At the end of this carpark begins the short walk to the viewpoint.
